HISTORY
The Radicepura Foundation was born in 2017 from the will of the Faro family to create a unique place, dedicated to the enhancement and richness of biodiversity, in Sicily. This is how the Radicepura Botanical Park was born in Giarre, enclosed between the slopes of Etna and the Ionian Sea, with an extension of about five hectares. The objective is to enhance nature as a driver of development through initiatives, events, cultural suggestions that convey sustainable and universal messages.
The botanical garden is a path that hosts rare species and unique specimens such as the Encephalartos, a genus of fossil cycads belonging to the Zamiaceae family. The park is located in the shadow of Etna, where fertile land has allowed the proliferation of more than 3.000 plant species, for a total of 5.000 variety of plants. To embellish the spaces, the "Palazzo" of the Radicepura Foundation and the "Palmento", a jewel of industrial archaeology, where Etna wine was produced, scenario for the film “The Godfather – part II". Tropical plants are preserved in the “Greenhouse”., including Ravenala madagascariensis and Cyathea australis.
The Radicepura Garden Festival is held within this wonderful setting, biennial of the Mediterranean garden, the first international event dedicated to garden design and landscape architecture in the Mediterranean, which involves great protagonists of landscape design, of art and architecture, designers and scholars. The heart of the Festival is the celebration of the garden, not only in its aesthetic-cultural value, but also for its role as an ideal place to gaze upon the beauties, in this case, of the Sicilian region.
